Special Olympics is Getting the Ball Rolling and Diving Back into Sport!

Open House and Registration Night being held on Thursday, September 22nd in Bracebridge

With all of us hoping that the biggest challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic remain behind us, life continues to bring familiar routines and a sense of normalcy. For Special Olympics athletes and volunteers across Muskoka, this of course means getting back to our favourite sports and all that comes with it: fitness, camaraderie, and a sense of inclusion.

Locally, volunteers are preparing for a fall return to 5-pin bowling, curling, Nordic skiing and swimming. Floor hockey could be offered depending on numbers, and there is also room to develop new sports such as basketball, bocce or even Pickleball. The community has a strong membership of athletes from Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville and surrounding areas, and is always welcoming new athletes of all ages.

Clubs meet weekly throughout the season and are led by dedicated volunteer coaches. There is also a local community council that takes care of the administrative side of things. Volunteers are being sought to fill roles at all levels.

The local council is hosting an open house and registration night for returning athletes and volunteers and those who would like to find out more about getting involved with the movement. This event will be held on Thursday, September 22nd from 6 to 8pm at the Your Independent Grocer location in Bracebridge.

Becoming involved as an athlete or volunteer in Special Olympics is very rewarding. The movement is dedicated to enriching the lives of Ontarians with an intellectual disability through sport. For more information on becoming involved with Special Olympics in Muskoka, please contact Special Olympics Ontario Program Consultant Hellaina Rothenburg at hellainar@specialolympicsontario.com or 1-888-333-5515 ext. 276.
