About Our Athletes

There are currently more than 100 registered athletes in Muskoka participating in sport clubs year round. The health benefits individuals receive from sport and recreation programs are widely known. Participation in physical activity promotes balance, co-ordination, body control and improves total physical fitness.

Athlete Eligibility. Is Special Olympics For Everyone?

In order to be eligible for participation in Special Olympics, an individual with an intellectual disability must agree to observe and abide by the SOC Sports Rules and the Special Olympics Ontario Code of Conduct.

Individuals of all ages and all abilities can train and compete in Special Olympics. Athletes train and compete against athletes of similar ability level.

How To Register As An Athlete? 

After viewing the Sports pages of this website, determine the sport in which you would like to participate. Once you have identified that, you can visit the online athlete registration form and we will connect you with local volunteers. Please visit http://athlete.specialolympicsontario.ca/ to complete the form. Contact information is also listed for each sport club so feel free to call the coach to ask specific questions about the program.

 How Old Do I Have To Be To Join Special Olympics?

Athletes may start competing at 8 years of age, and can continue to compete to any age. Athletes younger than age 8 might be interested in our Active Start and FUNdamentals programs.

When Are Your Sport Training Programs?

Most of our sport training programs take place during the evenings and weekends. Most competitions are held on weekends.

What Is the Cost? What If I Can’t Afford It? 

There is usually a small cost (which varies by sport club) to participate.

NO ATHLETE SHALL EVER BE DENIED THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN WEEKLY TRAINING OR COMPETITION OPPORTUNITIES BASED ON LACK OF FINANCIAL RESOURCES.
